Training and Competency Manager

Shape the future skills of a growing engineering workforce at Babcock's Walsall site. As a Training and Competency Manager, you will build and lead a newly created function critical to developing workforce capability within our specialist vehicle engineering business.

This role involves designing and delivering a long-term competency and qualifications strategy to ensure our people possess the skills for complex vehicle conversion, armouring, and modification programmes. You will collaborate with senior stakeholders to identify skills gaps, develop qualification pathways, and establish a sustainable skills pipeline to support future business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop qualification and competency pathways aligned with operational and business requirements, arranging nationally recognised vocational qualifications (Levels 1–3) in vehicle electrical, mechanical, coachbuilding, and coded welding disciplines.
  • Manage vocational qualifications and apprenticeship programmes from enrolment to successful completion.
  • Implement and maintain training systems, learner tracking, and competence assurance processes, including managing the training budget.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders to identify skills gaps and drive workforce development initiatives.
  • Support apprentices and employees through structured development programmes, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

This full-time, permanent role is based on site in Walsall, West Midlands, working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with an early finish every Friday.

Essential Experience:

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and people development capability.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing training, competency, or workforce development programmes.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to balance cost, value, and risk.

Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or technical discipline.
  • Assessor qualification such as A1 or CAVA.
  • Internal Quality Assurer qualification (V1/IQA), or willingness to obtain this qualification with support.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Eligibility may be affected by place of birth, nationality, citizenship, and residency.
