About the Programme

At Babcock, Systems Engineering is the foundation of our complex projects. As a Graduate Systems Engineer, you will be at the forefront of the UK’s most advanced engineering programmes. You’ll apply systems principles to ensure all components, processes, and stakeholders align, delivering safe, effective, and sustainable solutions.

Your work will have a significant impact. You could be involved in designing and integrating cutting-edge submarines, converting military vehicles, refurbishing naval ships, developing infrastructure for nuclear submarines, creating secure satellite communication systems, or advancing next-generation nuclear power plants. Each project offers unique challenges and opportunities to make a real difference.

You will support work across the full engineering lifecycle, from technology innovation and concept design through to production, commissioning, in-service support, and decommissioning. You'll help structure complexity by defining requirements, managing interfaces, and supporting integration within multidisciplinary teams. Through practical experience and structured development, you will build skills in stakeholder engagement, understanding system needs, risk identification and mitigation, and ensuring systems are ready for real-world application.

Programme Structure

Over two years, you will undertake placements every three to six months. This rotational structure allows you to explore a broad range of projects and teams, broadening your experience and professional network. Some placements may involve relocation, offering deeper insights into how the business operates.

You will collaborate with experienced professionals from disciplines including engineering design, software, mechanical, construction, and electrical engineering, as well as project management, quality assurance, and supply chain. This experience will build a strong foundation in systems engineering, allowing you to gradually take on greater responsibilities, such as leading small teams and overseeing projects. You can align your placements with your interests and career goals, gaining relevant experience in areas that matter most to you.

Development and Support

From day one, you will receive structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship. You’ll join our Graduate Development Programme, featuring expert-led masterclasses on communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing.

We offer guidance and cover all associated fees to support your journey towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.

Career Progression

Upon completing the programme, you will transition into a permanent role within our Engineering Function. You will continue to apply and expand your developed skills, and further your progress towards professional registration. This can support your advancement into more senior roles, such as Senior Engineer.

What You Need to Apply

• You must have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a BEng, MEng, BSc, or MSc in a STEM discipline. We welcome applicants from a broad range of subjects including Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and emerging technology fields such as AI, Machine Learning, Robotics, and Cybernetics.
• For this programme, you must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) security clearance.
• Under applicable national security legislation, this post may only be occupied by a sole UK national.

Location

Placements for the Systems Engineering programme are available in our Marine/Nuclear sector in Plymouth, based at Devonport.

Devonport, Plymouth, is the largest naval base in Western Europe, where you’ll support the Royal Navy’s surface ships and submarines. You'll contribute to projects like infrastructure life-extension programmes, capability upgrades, and the overhaul of nuclear-powered submarines. You could be involved in optimising maintenance strategies, supporting new system integration, or developing innovative solutions for safe and efficient system performance.

While you’ll join a specific business area and location, placements at different UK sites are possible. We encourage flexibility and openness to relocation throughout the programme, considering your personal circumstances.
