Internship: Multiphysics and Multiscale Simulation of Additive Manufacturing Processes

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It:

An internship opportunity titled « Stage en Simulation multiphysique et multiéchelles des processus de fabrication additive » has just opened at Airbus SAS on its Saint-Martin site. You will join the "Virtual Product Engineering" department, responsible for developing new methods to tackle complex problems beyond the current scope of existing tools.

The production of large parts with fine geometric details is a major challenge for the industrialization of metallic additive manufacturing in aeronautics. The optimization of these processes traditionally relies on extensive experimental campaigns. To reduce the number of trials and aim for a "right the first time" component, Airbus's R&T Centre (CRT) is developing advanced simulation tools to predict deformations (macroscopic scale), describe laser/material interaction (mesoscopic scale), and design alloys. Your internship will involve joining a team of researchers to participate in the implementation and validation of a complete simulation chain across various tools. This will include adding new functionalities to different models and confronting them with industrial test cases.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to develop expertise within an innovative R&D project, at the forefront of simulation and aligned with Airbus's global digital research strategy.

Internship Details:

This internship is for a duration of 6 months and will ideally start in March 2027 (this period is indicative and may be adjusted).

Your Main Missions Will Consist Of:

  • Tool onboarding: Getting familiar with open-source solver tools, including OpenFOAM for CFD calculations, as well as solids4foam and MFEM for thermomechanics.
  • Tool validation: Designing and executing numerical test cases (academic and industrial) to rigorously compare the simulation chain against experimental results.
  • Improvement of existing methods: Modifying current calculation methodologies to increase efficiency or better align with experimental trials.
  • Development of new features: Implementing and integrating new physical building blocks into the tool to expand its modeling capabilities.

Your tutor will support you throughout your internship, helping you develop your skills and achieve your professional objectives.

Skills You Will Develop:

  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Multiscale and Multiphysics Simulation
  • Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Volume Method (FV)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Programming (Python, C++, Rust)

Your Boarding Pass:

You are currently pursuing a Master 2 or 5th year of Engineering School in Numerical Simulation, Fluid Mechanics, Materials Engineering, or an equivalent field.

You Possess the Following Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Finite Element Method (FEM)
  • Finite Volume Method (FV)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Python programming
  • C++ programming
  • Rust programming

Soft Skills:

  • Team spirit
  • Proactivity
  • Autonomy

Language Skills:

  • English: Advanced
  • French: Advanced

Our Recruitment Process:

Your application will be analyzed carefully by our recruitment team. If your profile matches our expectations, you will be invited to a video interview. Following this step, if your application is successful, it will be proposed to the manager for an interview.
