About the Role
At Babcock, we are dedicated to creating a safe and secure world. As a Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor at our Devonport site, you will play a vital role within the Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, part of the Assurance Directorate. This group provides critical advice and regulatory interface on nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management, and assurance of compliance with legal and contractual requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Your core activity will involve the independent peer review (IPR) of Site Safety Justifications, including Plant Safety Cases, Modifications, Forward Action Plans (FAPs), and Concessions. This examination will assess their completeness, logic, and methodology against the company’s safety principles, criteria, and standards.
- Conduct independent peer reviews of safety documents and policy, methodology, strategy, and guidance documents in accordance with established procedures to satisfy the Business Management System (BMS), Nuclear Site Licence, and MOD Authorisation.
- Present the findings of peer reviews to members of the Nuclear Safety Committee, as required and on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM).
- Manage the conduct of consultants sub-contracted for the execution of external peer reviews as the lead assessor.
- Assist in formulating IPR strategy and policy to address emergent issues.
- Prepare peer review reports to the required standards and timescales, ensuring their incorporation into the SCaNDS/IPR database and ultimately the Licensee’s documentation archive via Safety Documentation records.
Working Arrangements
This is a full-time, permanent role working 35 hours per week. The position offers hybrid working arrangements, typically involving 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home.
Essential Experience
- General experience of safety-related engineering in a high-hazard industry.
- Significant experience in the conduct of safety analysis, ideally in a through-life support environment, including Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and fault tree analysis in support of probabilistic and deterministic safety assessments.
- Experience in the development, management, and analysis of fault schedules and the derivation of safety functional requirements.
- Experience of authoring safety case claims, arguments, and evidence to demonstrate how risks are being managed and controlled.
- A thorough understanding of Naval Base infrastructure with a detailed understanding of submarine engineering would be advantageous.
Qualifications
- Degree in an appropriate Scientific or Engineering discipline.
- Chartered accreditation by an appropriate Professional Institution.
- NUC0793 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent) - Babcock is happy to provide this training.
- NUC0794 Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent) - Babcock is happy to provide this training.
- NUC0911 Introduction to Safety Engineering - Babcock is happy to provide this training.
