Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Placement Year
This is a 12-month undergraduate placement opportunity within the Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) team, focused on maintaining in-service submarines and providing technical engineering support to the Ministry of Defence.
Throughout the year, you will complete a rotation of placements within SSE, experiencing different aspects of the business and broadening your engineering skills and knowledge. You will have the opportunity to contribute to exciting and varied projects such as system performance modelling and analysis, maintenance optimisations, engineering design, and support for future submarines.
Your work could involve using engineering tools and software (e.g. Autodesk, Ansys, Python, MATLAB), collaborating with knowledgeable engineers and stakeholders, and designing submarine components. You may also be involved in waterfront production and manufacture, as well as researching new technologies.
The placement year is designed to be flexible and tailored to your interests, allowing you to apply your engineering knowledge in real-world situations and gain exposure to a wide range of mechanical engineering challenges.

What you’ll need
- You must be an undergraduate studying a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- You must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) security clearance.
- Under applicable national security legislation, this post may only be occupied by a UK national.
