About the Programme
Join our Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme and seize the opportunity to work on some of the UK’s most significant engineering initiatives. At Babcock, you will be involved in various stages of the engineering lifecycle, from initial concept design and innovation through to production, commissioning, ongoing support, and eventual decommissioning. The scope of work is broad, potentially including the design of advanced submarines and surface ships, conversion of military vehicles, ship refurbishment, and the development of next-generation nuclear power solutions that contribute to the UK’s net-zero targets.
You will collaborate with a global network of engineers and specialists, contributing to projects that ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of critical national infrastructure. This may involve leading design reviews, conducting stress analysis, or managing the integration of mechanical systems into complex platforms.
Programme Structure and Development
The two-year programme features rotational placements, typically lasting three to six months each. These rotations provide exposure to a variety of projects and teams, broadening your experience and understanding of Babcock’s operations. Some placements may involve relocation, offering opportunities to expand your professional network.
Throughout the programme, you will build a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles while gradually taking on increased responsibilities, including leading small teams and overseeing project elements. Placements can be tailored to align with your interests and career aspirations, allowing you to gain relevant experience in areas most important to you.
Support and Training
From your first day, you will receive comprehensive support, including structured training and dedicated mentorship. You will participate in Babcock’s Graduate Development Programme, which includes expert-led masterclasses focusing on key professional skills such as communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing. We also provide guidance and cover fees associated with achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
Career Progression
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will transition into a permanent role within our Engineering Function, continuing to apply and develop your skills. You will have opportunities to progress towards professional registration, a recognised standard of engineering competence, which can lead to more advanced roles such as Senior Engineer. What We're Looking For
To be eligible for this programme, you must have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a BEng or MEng in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical, Structural, Motorsport, Materials, Mechatronics, Engine Systems, Welding, Automotive, or AeroMechanical.
Security Clearance Requirements:
Many of our programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions. For this programme, you must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) security clearance. Due to applicable national security legislation, this post may only be occupied by a sole UK national. Your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency may impact your eligibility.
Location
This Mechanical Engineering programme for September 2027 is based in our Marine/Nuclear sector in Plymouth. You will be located at Devonport, a major naval base. While your primary location will be Plymouth, placements at different sites across the UK are possible, and flexibility regarding relocation is encouraged.
