About the Programme
The Materials Engineering Graduate Programme offers a unique opportunity to apply your passion for materials science, welding engineering, and metallurgy to critical UK defence initiatives. What You Will Do

Programme Structure and Development
Over two years, you will complete a series of placements designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of materials engineering within the marine defence sector. Rotations may include Metallurgy and Materials, Welding Design, and Non-Destructive Testing, offering diverse learning experiences. You will also collaborate with other sectors and sites to gain a broader perspective on end-to-end operations. Structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship are provided from day one, including expert-led masterclasses and full guidance and fee coverage for Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.

What We Are Looking For
- BEng, MEng, BSc, or MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing, Welding, Metallurgy, Fabrication, Aerospace, or Naval Architecture (or on track to achieve).
- Industrial experience or placements are desirable.
- A clear interest in materials, marine engineering, or defence, with an understanding of the sector's challenges.
- Experience with technical or engineering standards and regulations (e.g., nuclear, health, safety, environment) is beneficial.
- Ability to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), Security Check (SC), and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPI) clearance.
- Must be a sole UK national due to applicable national security legislation.
Location
This programme is based at Devonport, Plymouth, a key location for supporting the Royal Navy’s surface ships and submarines. You will be expected to attend your base location in person up to five days per week. Flexibility may be required for potential placements at other locations during the programme.
