About the Programme
The Health Physics Graduate Programme at Babcock is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in safeguarding people and the environment within the Ministry of Defence's fleet. Based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth, you will gain practical experience working on the newest class of submarines, contributing to critical tasks such as radiation monitoring, safety procedure review, and radiological assessments. Working alongside seasoned specialists, you'll apply your academic knowledge to real-world safety measures, preparing you for a fulfilling career in nuclear operations.
Programme Structure and Development
Over a two-year period, you will participate in team rotations, engaging with diverse radiological projects. This structure allows for the development of technical expertise and a deep understanding of health physics principles. As your skills grow, you will progressively take on more challenging tasks and increased responsibility, directly contributing to the safe operation of the dockyard.

The programme includes participation in the Graduate Development Programme, featuring masterclasses in essential professional skills. A key component of this role is the completion of a postgraduate qualification in Radiological Protection, delivered through three intensive four-week modules at HMS Sultan in Gosport, Hampshire, with accommodation and food provided.

What You Need to Apply
- You must have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a BSc (Hons) degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
- Experience with any postgraduate qualification in this area, such as an MSc or PG (Dip) in Radiological Protection, is desirable.
- Comfort working in a range of operational environments, including potential work at height, within confined spaces, and in radiological areas. Full training and safety support will be provided.
- Must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance.
- Must be a sole UK national due to applicable national security legislation and Trade Control restrictions.
Location and Working Arrangements
This programme is based in the Marine/Nuclear sector in Plymouth. You will be expected to attend your base location in person for up to five days per week to maximise learning from colleagues and benefiting from mentoring. Travel to HMS Sultan and other partner organisations for training will be required. While Plymouth is your primary base, flexibility for potential placements in other locations during the programme is expected.
