About the Role
Champion Safety and Shape a Safer Future Across Critical Defence Operations. At Babcock, we're working to create a safe and secure world, together. As a SHE Compliance Officer at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site, you'll play a vital part in this mission. You’ll make a meaningful impact every day by helping to protect people, assets, and operations across one of Europe’s largest and most complex naval engineering environments.
This role is at the forefront of safety, health, and environmental assurance, supporting teams who deliver essential work that enables the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet to operate safely and effectively. You will lead audits, guide operational teams, and ensure compliance within both office environments and the unique, highly specialised submarine environment. Your insight will strengthen safety performance, prevent incidents, and help shape robust emergency and assurance processes.
This is an exciting opportunity to build your SHE expertise while influencing work that supports national defence and long-term engineering capability. The role is full time, 35 hours per week, and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

- Conduct workplace and desktop audits across the SHE Audit Plan, reviewing documentation, processes, pre-job briefs, and onsite activity.
- Lead or support scheduled and emergent audits to assess compliance against the SHE Management System and other required standards.
- Prepare high-quality audit and inspection reports that clearly identify evidence-based findings and agreed actions.
- Work closely with operational teams to help shape and deliver improvement plans that strengthen safety and environmental performance.
- Support a culture of best practice across the site, acting as a trusted advisor to colleagues and stakeholders.
Essential Experience
- Experience working extensively with ISO45001 and ISO14001-certified Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems.
- Practical SHE Management experience within industrial, engineering, maritime, or similar operational environments.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
- Confident presenting and engaging with internal and external stakeholders across multiple levels.
Qualifications
- Current Auditor qualification or actively working toward it.
- NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Management Certificate (or equivalent).
Desirable Qualifications
- Lead Auditor qualification (or internal audit qualification considered).
- Membership of IOSH, IEMA, CQI, or other relevant professional bodies.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who can achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role. Many positions within Babcock are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. Your eligibility may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
