Senior Human Factors Engineer

About the Role

As a Senior Human Factors Engineer, you will be responsible for providing Human Factors Integration support. This involves applying the Defence Standard (Def Stan 00-251) in the design of products and processes. Your work will include tailoring and estimating human factors efforts, capturing and managing requirements, risks, and opportunities, offering design guidance, conducting testing and evaluation, and supporting acceptance and review processes.

Core Duties

• Provide Human Factors Integration support in the design of products and processes.
• Tailor and estimate required human factors work, capturing and managing requirements, risks, and opportunities.
• Offer design guidance, conduct testing and evaluation, and support acceptance and review.
• Plan and execute quantitative and qualitative human factors assessments (e.g., human error, workload, situation awareness, ergonomic analysis, usability).
• Advise on the design and usability of hardware and software products.
• Identify and implement novel or updated approaches to Human Factors best practice based on up-to-date research.
• Scope and manage the execution of Human Factors work.

Essential Skills and Experience

• A recognised bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, or Engineering.
• Registered membership of the Chartered Institute of Human Factors (or Technical Member with eligibility for registration within 12 months).
• Demonstrable experience applying Human Factors methods in defence or a safety-critical industry.
• Familiarity with or experience applying Defence Human Factors Standards (e.g., Def Stan 00-251 or Mil-Std-1472); other industry standards are also welcome.

The Team

The DI Human Factors team collaborates with other engineers to ensure an integrated approach to Usability and Human Safety throughout the engineering lifecycle, delivering a holistic system design for our customers. As experts in our field, we support projects with complex HF Integration requirements, Usability, or Safety considerations.
