Airbus Defence and Space is seeking a PhD student to support the Central R&T Materials Domain department in Ottobrunn, Munich. This 36-month position offers a unique opportunity to undertake a PhD thesis while gaining practical experience as a Material Scientist.
Your Responsibilities:
- Conduct material screening, development, and testing, including physico-chemical, mechanical, and electromagnetic absorption properties, with a focus on high-temperature performance.
- Model and understand electromagnetic absorbers.
- Become proficient in advanced experimental, numerical, and machine learning methods for data analysis and new material development.
- Facilitate the transfer of polymer composite manufacturing processes from 2D to 3D, such as winding and resin transfer moulding (RTM).
- Integrate functionality into 3D CFRP (sub)components.
- Author scientific papers and technical reports, and present findings at conferences and meetings.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Proficiency in office applications (Google Workspace).
- Experience with Python programming and a basic understanding of machine learning tools are advantageous.
- Prior experience with polymeric composites is beneficial.
- Basic knowledge of coupon manufacturing, physico-chemical and mechanical testing, and data analysis.
- Full professional command of English and German.
