Master Thesis: Process Definition and Application Development for the Processing of High-Strength Steel using Powder Bed Fusion
Airbus Helicopters is seeking a Master's student to support the Aircraft Doors department in Donauwörth. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical engineering experience during your final thesis project.
Role and Objectives:
The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a typical aircraft passenger door application (e.g., latch shaft) using the 1.2709 martensitic hardening steel within a powder bed process scenario. You will conduct an initial assessment of the technical-economic operational point, including weight determination, throughput, and cost analysis. The focus is on the development of a process-adapted technical solution and the representation of its technical implications as a feasibility study.
Your Responsibilities:
- Analyze the current state of machinery and plant technology for additive manufacturing systems, the mechanical properties of steel 1.2709, and its processing characteristics in additive manufacturing.
- Conduct research on aircraft passenger doors and their existing basic designs and construction methods.
- Define the process chain for additive manufacturing with 1.2709 and establish an requirements profile.
- Develop new basic designs and consolidate fundamental solutions into a new application.
- Describe an operational point covering build plate design, printing time, and cost estimation for the production of the raw print part.
Your Profile:
- Enrolled full-time student (m/f/d) in Aerospace Engineering, Lightweight Construction, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a comparable field of study.
- Sound knowledge of technical mechanics, materials science, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Experience with CAE software.
- Basic experience in 3D modeling with CATIA is desirable.
- Basic programming skills (e.g., Python) are advantageous.
- Fluent German and English language skills.
What We Offer:
- Attractive remuneration and a balanced work-life schedule with a 35-hour week (flexible working hours).
- An international environment with opportunities to build global contacts.
- Work with modern and diverse technologies.
- Be treated as a full team member, with close collaboration and participation in weekly team meetings.
- Opportunity to join the “Generation Airbus Community” to expand your network.
Location: Donauwörth Start Date: From 01.10.2026 Duration: 6 months
