Role Description: Assistant Project Manager
The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of projects or work packages by coordinating project management activities. This role involves assisting with planning, monitoring performance, and decision-making. You will collaborate with stakeholders, apply project management best practices, and provide guidance and leadership to small teams as needed.
Core Duties
- Perform advanced project reporting and scheduling.
- Undertake advanced problem-solving, leveraging previous experience.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of business processes and procedures.
- Utilise administration and general office skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and spreadsheets.
- Lead a small project or a work package within a larger project.
- Manage the full project lifecycle to ensure customer needs are met and financial/other benefits are achieved.
- Identify, assess, and manage project risks.
- Apply appropriate project management methods and tools (predictive or adaptive approaches).
- Agree project approaches with stakeholders, prepare realistic plans (quality, risk, communications), and track activities against the project schedule, managing stakeholder involvement.
This role is for an experienced project professional capable of managing a small team and delivering results with limited guidance from a Line Manager.
Essential Skills
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of project management policies, processes, procedures, and systems.
- A degree-level qualification or significant practical knowledge gained through relevant experience.
- A recognised project management qualification (e.g., APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or equivalent).
- Ability to analyse and interpret large volumes of data, transforming it into meaningful insights with strong attention to detail and critical assessment of data quality.
The Ship Repair Team
The Ship Repair team supports the Type 45 Class fleet through a major upkeep programme. Currently around 20 strong and expected to grow to over 100 people, the team offers excellent opportunities for career development, long-term stability, and involvement in a complex, high-profile programme delivering critical capability.
