About the Role
As an Appointed Person for Lifting Operations at BAE Systems, you will be an integral part of the Lifting Operations department, contributing to projects within Workshop facilities or afloat areas. You will be based at the Portsmouth Naval Base and will be crucial in delivering advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace, and security solutions.
What You'll Be Doing
You will be responsible for safely and professionally delivering planned and reactive maintenance on a variety of equipment, adhering to key performance indicators and the working time directive. This includes:
- Preparing lifting plans as required by your Team Leader.
- Providing technical advice and support for lifting operations to clients.
- Carrying out slinging duties when not functioning as an Appointed Person.
Core Duties
- Confirming compliance with all policies, procedures, and standard operating practices, with recommendations for action and continuous improvement.
- Ensuring all equipment, plant, and accessories are within their test/examination dates and are in a safe, usable condition.
- Guaranteeing all work is undertaken in accordance with relevant site rules, regulations (including LOLER and PUWER), standards, and company policies.
- Completing all administrative tasks associated with the role, assisting in the creation of risk assessments, pre-use check sheets, and standard/complex lift plans.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Successful completion of an AP training course with suitable practical and theoretical knowledge of lifting operations.
- Knowledge of LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and BS7121 Part 1 and 3.
- Good Health and Safety procedural understanding.
- Good understanding of SSOW (Safe Systems of Work).
- Hold both a recognised Appointed Person & Slinging qualification (e.g., Blue card / CPCS / NPORS), alongside demonstratable knowledge/experience, or hold an NVQ 5/6 in this area.
The Slinging & Lifting Fleeting Team
As part of the lifting team, you will plan all lifts, from basic to complex, and complete drawings to scale using traditional methods or relevant software. You will liaise with your Team Leader for all lifting-related matters. This role offers variety, with opportunities to progress within the lifting structure and the company.
