As a Software Engineer within the Software Systems Capability function, your primary responsibility will be to specify, design, validate, and test software components. This includes defining low-level requirements for software and source code. The Principal Software Engineer role specifically focuses on ensuring the on-time delivery and quality of software and its associated design and verification artefacts. This is achieved through decomposing designs, developing tests, and conducting analysis to ensure software implementation meets allocated requirements.

What you will be doing:

• Review and agree high-level software requirements, including their testability.
• Analyze and translate high-level requirements into validated designs for software components.
• Capture applicable design constraints and quality attributes for components.
• Design and implement software components to meet high-level requirements and design constraints/standards. Allocate software requirements to test vehicles defined in the verification plan.
• Analyze software components for functional behaviour, potentially using modelling and simulation to verify design against high-level requirements. Develop and review software tests to provide evidence of requirement satisfaction.
• Analyze existing software for architectural or design issues and drive improvements to meet modern robustness and safety requirements.
• Analyze verification test results against software requirements.
• Provide targeted testing of software-level functionality to support problem investigation, closure, and customer issues.
• Liaise with other disciplines to understand the functional performance capabilities of system components, facilitating effective component design.
• Potentially participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for the department.
• Potentially develop, implement, document, and maintain policies, procedures, guidelines, tools, and training.
• Develop the knowledge to provide advice to project teams and create, search, and reuse knowledge with guidance from established practitioners.
• Produce reports as required to document work carried out.

Position Qualifications:

• Strong knowledge of software design, system architecture, software and/or hardware architecture, software and hardware development process constraints, and embedded software testing at module level.
• Degree Qualified.
• Strong knowledge of modern C++ in relation to real-time systems, including an understanding of refactoring legacy code for improved robustness.
• A working appreciation of associated engineering disciplines.
• Proficient with design and analysis tools, understanding their capabilities.
• Professional courage to highlight areas of concern and risk regarding product suitability to meet requirements safely and functionally.
• Ability to interpret test results and provide informed conclusions, including understanding measurement uncertainty.
• Demonstrated ability to manage tasks to completion, ensuring appropriate business areas are informed.
• Ability to identify and manage risk in collaboration with team members.

• Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to understand the required level of analysis.
• Good time management skills, able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment, responding dynamically to evolving objectives.
• Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, able to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
• Ability to research application issues and products by being outward-focused and seeking solutions/information from outside the immediate area.
• Skilled at working within a team-oriented, collaborative environment or as a sole contributor.
• A working knowledge of marine automation systems, including industry standards.
• Keen to develop capability through appropriate training and workshops.
• Where required, able to train people to improve business capability in specific areas and deliver training material.
