Mechanical Engineer

BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Team in Great Baddow, Chelmsford. This interdisciplinary team focuses on developing future aerospace, security, and defence systems, tackling complex data and unlocking digital advantage in demanding environments.

Role Responsibilities:

• Receive, interpret, and clarify customer and colleague instructions, providing feedback and design input.
• Design and detail mechanical solutions using CAD, creating 3D models, assemblies, and mechanical drawings, supported by calculations and analysis.
• Analyse designs to ensure structural integrity and thermal management performance.
• Produce design descriptions and performance reports for reviews and customer communication.
• Provide design-for-manufacture advice, leveraging knowledge of new materials and manufacturing techniques.
• Prepare design and manufacture details for prototypes through to production-ready data packs.
• Peer review colleagues' designs.
• Provide a mechanical engineering design service, promoting best practices with preferred toolsets.
• Innovate and develop new technologies in mechanical design and thermal management.
• Introduce new materials and processes to reduce production costs.
• Liaise with internal and external customers to develop requirements and provide bespoke, analysed solutions.
• Report findings clearly and concisely, both written and verbally.

Skills and Qualifications:

• A good degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience.
• Excellent technical background with sound knowledge of mechanical design, structural analysis, design for manufacture, and materials.
• Proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element (FE) tools, and Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work with a high level of self-direction, with occasional supervision and development of other engineers.
• Knowledge of basic environmental testing methods.
• Heat transfer and thermal management experience is beneficial.
• Good interpersonal skills for effective teamwork.
• Ability and willingness to learn new skills and techniques.
• Preparation of technical reports, test procedures, process specifications, and other product documentation is desirable.
