Mechanical Design Engineer - Electrical Machines

Rolls‑Royce is at the forefront of aerospace propulsion, pioneering the Power that Matters by accelerating the journey to more sustainable aviation. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in electrical propulsion, energy storage, critical systems, or aerospace mechanical design to join our multi-disciplinary team. This role focuses on the design, development, and integration of advanced electrical machines for next-generation aircraft.

We offer an inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in continuous learning and provides opportunities for career growth. Hybrid working arrangements are available, balancing time between the office and remote locations, managed locally and based on business needs.

What you will be doing:

  • Design and development of high-performance electrical machines, power electronics units, energy storage systems, and electromechanical systems for aerospace applications.
  • Perform calculations and conduct structural, thermal, and vibration analyses.
  • Collaborate with electrical, thermal, and systems engineers, interfacing parties, and stakeholders to optimize motor architecture and packaging.
  • Work closely with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and testing teams to lead designs from concept to production.
  • Navigate gated review processes, presenting technical justifications and addressing regulatory compliance.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, assembly drawings, technical reports, and other documentation in line with standards, ensuring self-checked high quality.
  • Formally manage technical risks, ensuring designs are Safe, Reliable, and Durable.
  • Drive down technical risk through prototypes, material testing, and manufacturing trials to validate analyses.
  • Work with Validation and Verification Engineers to develop a V&V strategy.
  • Identify and launch technology development activities to address technical risks where appropriate.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Experience in innovative and collaborative working within cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance product designs.
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and engineering concepts (manufacturing engineering, cost engineering, product definition).
  • Ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking to solve technical problems and make justified decisions.
  • Strong technical communication skills (Technical Writing, Presenting, CAD). Familiarity with Siemens NX and Teamcenter is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity and aerospace certification frameworks.
  • Experience with the mechanical design, manufacture, service, or integration of high-performance electric machines is a strong advantage.
