// Role Specification

Human Factors Graduate Programme

Human Factors is crucial for ensuring the safety and smooth operation of various processes within the nuclear sector. This programme offers the opportunity to work on live projects across the full lifecycle, from initial concept and construction through to in-service support, decommissioning, and incident investigation. You will be part of multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to the design and improvement of complex nuclear facilities and systems, and refining the use and maintenance of critical systems.

Your responsibilities may include task analysis, contributing to requirements definition, and ensuring personnel have the necessary tools, environment, and procedures to work safely and effectively. You will also interact with operational staff, shadow senior professionals, and collaborate with engineers, designers, and stakeholders to build expertise and make a significant impact through design.

Programme Structure

This is a comprehensive two-year programme designed to develop your confidence and expertise in Human Factors. You will undertake rotations across different teams and projects, applying your skills in real-world scenarios and contributing to safe and effective operations. These rotations are designed to broaden your experience, potentially involving different locations, and will help you build your professional network and deepen your understanding of the business.

Development and Support

From the outset, you will receive structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship. The Graduate Development Programme includes expert-led masterclasses covering essential skills such as communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing. A key development opportunity includes working towards technical membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).

Career Progression

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will transition into a permanent Human Factors role. Your development will continue with support for progression into more senior roles and increased responsibility. The Babcock Role Framework provides a clear view of career pathways, development opportunities, and the resources needed for professional growth.

Rewards and Benefits

In addition to a minimum starting salary of £35,000, employees benefit from:

  • A minimum of 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Generous pension and employee share schemes.
  • Flexible benefits, including a cycle-to-work scheme and discounts.
  • Comprehensive wellbeing support, including an Employee Assistance Programme, digital GP service, and health checks.

There are also opportunities to participate in STEM outreach activities and volunteering.

Application Requirements

Applicants should have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a BEng, MEng, BSc, MSc, BA, or MA in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Behavioural Sciences, Applied Psychology, Cognitive Sciences, Systems Engineering, or Sociology. Due to the nature of many programmes within this sector, candidates must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance.

Location

This programme is based within Cavendish Nuclear business and offers positions in Warrington or Bristol. Agile working arrangements are available, but several days per week will be spent on-site to support your role and development. Your career will continue in the same location post-programme.

Joining Cavendish Nuclear means engaging in significant engineering projects, including nuclear site decommissioning, construction and operation of power plants, and work on the UK’s nuclear deterrent. Your role will contribute to cleaning up the nuclear legacy and ensuring energy security and net zero commitments.

Application Process

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and early submission is recommended as the programme may close early if oversubscribed. Please apply to only one programme. If you require adjustments or support during the application stage, please contact accesshelp@babcockinternational.com. Flexible working options will be discussed at interview.
