GCHQ Careers: Roles, Salary, Vetting and How to Apply

What does GCHQ do, and what’s it actually like to work there?
GCHQ traces its origins to 1919 as the Government Code and Cypher School, with its most famous chapter at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. Today it’s the UK’s signals intelligence and cyber agency, working alongside MI5 and MI6 to counter terrorism, cyber-attacks and state threats, and it operates the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the UK’s public-facing authority on cyber security. GCHQ is also the UK’s contribution to the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership with the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Staff are based mainly in Cheltenham, with further sites in Bude, Manchester, and smaller presences elsewhere in the UK.

GCHQ recruits across languages, intelligence and data analysis, software engineering, business enabling functions and project management, plus apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and direct hire from industry or the public sector for experienced specialists. Technical roles are assessed against the government’s Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) capability framework, the same standard used across UK civil service technology roles, so candidates from a general tech background have a concrete, published benchmark to prepare against rather than having to guess what’s expected.

How much does GCHQ pay?
GCHQ doesn’t publish a single starting salary. Pay follows civil service grading, varies by role and location, and specific roles sometimes carry additional recruitment or skills payments on top of base pay, both of which appear on individual job adverts rather than as a headline figure. Third-party aggregator data is unusually inconsistent for GCHQ specifically, ranging from roughly £26,000 for entry-level roles to £85,000-plus for senior specialist positions, spread wide enough that it’s more useful as a sense of scale than a number to plan around. Check the live advert for the role you’re applying to rather than any third-party average.
What does the application and vetting process involve?
Expect an online application, initial online assessments (aptitude, technical or work-sample depending on the role), and one or more interviews, which for technical roles typically includes a skills-based interview against the DDaT framework. GCHQ’s own recruitment material states the full process, including vetting, typically takes six to nine months, and recommends staying in your current role until you have a final offer. DV is the standard clearance level, and GCHQ is explicit that candidates should not use AI to generate or complete application answers on their behalf, use AI tools during live interviews or assessments, or input personal information about themselves or GCHQ into AI platforms, worth knowing before you start drafting anything.
How does GCHQ relate to MI5 and MI6?
The three agencies split by function rather than by seniority or prestige. GCHQ collects and analyses signals intelligence, communications and cyber threat data, MI5 handles domestic security threats, and MI6 gathers human intelligence overseas. In practice the three work closely together on shared threats, and a role at any one of them can involve direct contact with the other two.
